Genre This book is a young adult, fantasy. This book is a young adult book because this book has quite a lot of violence and a few curse words. This book also fits into the fantasy genre because it has all kinds of things that do not actually exist in real life. For example in this book there are dragons, dwarves, and elves and all kinds of other unworldly things. For example in the very beginning in the prologue there are three elements of fiction. They include Elves, a Shade, Urgals, and magic. Like on page one, there is a good description of Urgals, ”They resembled men with bowed legs and thick, brutish arms made for crushing. A pair of twisted horns grew above their small ears.” Also there is a description of the shade at the top of page one, “He looked human except for his crimson hair and maroon eyes. On page two there is a good description of the elves as well. “On the first horse was an elf with pointed ears and elegantly slanted eyebrows. His build was slim but strong, like a rapier.” Another element of this book being a fiction book is that it has magic. On page three there is the first example of this, “ The shade jumped out from behind the tree, raised his right hand, and shouted, “Garjzla!” A red bolt flashed from his palm toward the elven lady”
Plot summary: the story begins by Eragon stalking a deer. he had been tracking it for three days. then suddenly a bright blue light appears and a dark blue stone appears out of nowhere. at first Eragon is very cautious of it but then he takes it with him. he tries to sell the "Rock" to the town butcher but when he finds out that its from the spine he refuses to even touch it. but after some quarrel Eragon keeps the stone and goes home with some meat, because the town smith came to the rescue. but the following night the dragon from the egg hatches and Eragon tries to understand what will happen to him now since having a dragon is like a death sentence. especially if you resist the king.
Main Characters There are many main characters in the book Eragon. These are just three, Eragon himself, his dragon saphira, and lastly the town storyteller and Eragon’s teacher, Brom. First is Eragon, most of what happens in the book revolves around him. He starts off by just being a simple farm boy, who has lives with his uncle and his cousin for all of his life. He has no idea of who is father is and his mother left him with his uncle when he was a baby,” Sloan’s wife Ismira, went over the Igualda falls a year before you were brought here”, “,that his mother, Selena, had come home to Carvahall alone and pregnant.. But when he finds the dragon egg it changes his life and everyone’s life forever. The second of the main characters is saphira Eragon’s dragon. Saphira hatched for Eragon because she felt like that he was the only worthy rider in all of Alagaësia. Not much of Saphira’s past is revealed in the book. But the reader can find out that she is one of the last three dragon eggs alive and one of the last four dragons alive in all of Alagaësia. Also saphira is the last female dragon in existence. That makes saphira an even more valuable target for the empire and the Varden. This means that saphira is the last chance for the existence of dragons. Another fact on the movie and the book, in the movie saphira for some reason turns from a hatchling to a full grown dragon in about a minute and saphira stated that he has named herself, but in the book saphira grows over time and Eragon names her. Lastly there is Brom the town storyteller. Not much is revealed about Brom until he escapes the Ra’zac with Eragon and saphira. When Brom dies towards the end of the book, because of a fatal wound inflicted by the Ra’zac. He reveals right before his death that he was a rider “there on his palm was the gedwëy ignasia. You’re a rider he asked incredulously”, and that Murtag’s father; Morzan slew his dragon right before him during battle. Eventually when Eragon and Murtag reach the Varden, more is revealed about Brom. For example that Brom played a very large role in the founding of the Varden. Also that after Morzan killed Brom’s dragon saphira, Brom dedicated his life to causing as much mischief and damage to the Varden as he could. Then lastly is it is revealed that he eventually did kill his arch nemesis Murtag. Then it is stated that Brom decided to go into hiding in order to train the next rider if possible.
Themes or big ideas These are just three of the many themes found in the book Eragon, they are a kind of good versus bad, a kind of transformation from a juvenile or child to an adult or becoming a man, and lastly a kind of adventure or exploration aspect is also found in the book. First was the good vs. bad. In the book aspects of good and bad constantly present themselves. The main ones: the empire and the varden fighting for control of Alagaësia. The empire being the bad guys with Galbatorix being the leader are trying to maintain control over their land, and in addition because Galbatorix can never die (because he is a rider) means that if there was no one to oppose him would mean that he would rule forever. The varden begin the opposers of the empire, are the ones trying to free Alagaësia of this unfair rule. The next theme in the book is a kind of growing up. An example of this is that in the beginning he was a simple farm boy, no worries and nothing too exciting was in his life. But then at the end of the book he has transformed into a formidable foe to the empire. Then the last theme would be a type of adventure. For the first time in his life Eragon is leaving his home and might not come back. But he is not going alone because he does have his dragon, and he has Brom to teach both Eragon and Saphira.
Symbolic image

This is my badly drawn take on saphira. The reason why this could be considered a symbolic connection is because there is no official or real image of saphira. Anywhere except on the cover of the book and the cover shows only the head. Or the movie, which isn’t accurate to the book. This is because in the book it states that saphira has webbed wings. But then in the movie saphira has scaled wings. This could be considered a good thing. Good because it lets people come up with their own world and image of all the characters.
Major conflict or major problem The major conflict in the book Eragon is that Eragon has a huge responsibility on his hands. One of them is that he must raise one of the last dragons in Alagaësia. This is very important because fromthe second he laid his eyes upon the dragon he had a death sentence on his hands. The varden is a rebel group in the book their only purpose is to over throw the empire of whom galbatorix is the king of. Now this poses a choice for Eragon he has three choices in the book. They are either to join the varden and fight to overthrow the empire, join the empire and be controlled forever by the king, or lastly just be killed by either group. Another problem is that the king has two servants known as the Ra’Zac they are a kind of royal assassins. They are not humans, elves, dwarves, or Urgals. They are notorious for being extremely hard to kill. Now this poses an extremely difficult obstacle when he practically has to travel across the empire with a dragon, and with no combat experience as a farm boy. But luckily in his village there is an old man called Brom. He is the village storyteller. But Eragon and no one else know that he actually was a dragon rider a long time ago. This means that he is extremely well trained and he is very powerful and he ends up being the one to train him while he is alive.

Similarities to other works One book that comes to mind immediately is the hobbit it is very similar to this book. They both have many fiction components. For example in Eragon there is a lot of magic and it is more common, and in the hobbit there isn’t much magic except for Gandalf. Another similarity is the races in both of the books. In both there are elves, humans and dwarves for the main races. However there are some that are not included. Then after the hobbit comes the video game to mind: Skyrim. Although the storylines are different, some of the aspects (like with the hobbit) are the same. For example in Skyrim there are dragons and magic and elves. But the dwarves in Skyrim are supposedly extinct and Skyrim is full of ferocious blood, thirsty, dragons that want to eliminate anything and everything. Then lastly the movie Eragon is another similarity to the book. But the movie was very badly abridged. The movie was missing a lot of major events that occurred in the book. For example towards the beginning they left out the part when the traders came in to Carvahall. Another major event that was left out of the movie was when Eragon and Brom went Tierm. They also added a scene that did not actually occur in the book. That was when Eragon and Brom killed the Ra’zac. This did not actually happen Eragon kills the Ra’zac in the third book of the inheritance cycle.
